Ballymena worked hard to overcome a spirited Derry side, who were hit with an early Rodger McBurney try, converted by Jonny McMullan, who stepped up again to convert a Mark Foster try who broke from the back of the scrum to run thirty metres and score at the posts. McMullan crowned an excellent first half by finishing off a back movement and score far out on the right. This time he didn’t convert, but scored another unconverted try leaving the half time score 24-0.
Glenn Baillie was next on the scoreboard for Ballymena with a determined run from thirty five metres, fending off several Derry defenders to score half way out on the left, the try again converted by McMullan.
With the score at 31-0 against them, Derry struck back with an unconverted try of their own, cancelled out by a Jonny Rosborough try, who latched on to a Baillie kick ahead, leaving McMullan with a fairly straightforward conversion. Derry were then awarded a penalty try, but had no defence to a burst through the centre for a try by Rodger McBurney, again converted by McMullan.
Final Score 45-12
