Dear Colleague in Sport,

Memorial to John H. Caldwell

We were all greatly saddened in the spring of 2016 by the sudden and unexpected death of our friend John Caldwell, while he was on holiday in the West Indies with his beloved wife Nan.

Hubert Taylor’s eloquent tribute to John, written shortly after his death, says more about this man of Eaton Park than there is space to relate here. It is worth repeating, however, that John Caldwell was involved with sport at Raceview Road as a player and administrator for well over half a century.  His primary interest, of course, was cricket and he served for some twenty years as Honorary Secretary of the Cricket Section, before becoming Chairman of BRFC itself in the 1999 – 2000 season.  Thereafter, he served the Club for a period as Director of Grounds and Property and remained an enthusiastic Tuesday Slabber and member of the Supporters’ Club.

Over the years John as well found time to represent his home club most effectively on the committees of the Northern Cricket Union, so it was no surprise when John was elected Chairman of the NCU in the 1996-1997 season and then President of that body in 2004.  The NCU formally recognised his immense service to it by conferring Honorary Life Membership on him in 2015.

Meanwhile, John was representing NCU interests at the Irish Cricket Union and that body had also no trouble in recognising his talents by electing him their Chairman in 2000 and, subsequently, President in 2004.

At this point it has been agreed by the BRFC Board of Governors that the Cricket Section would take the lead in erecting a memorial to commemorate the life of John Caldwell.  The memorial will be in the form of a clock, to be erected on the outside of the clubhouse, and accompanied by a suitably inscribed plaque.

If you would like to make a contribution to the placing of this memorial please follow the instructions on the slip below.

Thank you.

Yours in sport,

George Glass

Chairman BRFC (Cricket Section)
