Saturday saw Ballymena 3s take on Cooke Collegians 2nd XI in the Minor Cup, the side they lost to the previous week in the league.
Fielding a strong side, the Braidmen were asked to bat first and immediately took advantage of a good wicket and speedy outfield, with a number of good partnerships being built throughout the innings. The 3s steadily built an impressive score with Stewart Watt, John Nicholl and Paul Campbell all making good contributions. It was James Carmichael, however, who was the mainstay of the innings, coming in at 4 and batting through to the end for an unbeaten 66 and helping the home side to a total of 185-8 from their 30 overs.
In response, the visitors got off to an equally fast start due to a combination of some good batting and some wayward bowling. However once Matthew Bell found his rhythm, clean bowling both openers, the pendulum swung the home side’s way. With impressive spells from Paul Campbell and Calum Crease who between them bowled 12 overs for only 26 runs, with Campbell also taking 3 wickets, the final result was only a matter of time. When O’Boyle took the final wicket, Cooke Collegians were all out for 126, a win by 59 runs for the home side, who now look forward to a second round tie against Muckamore IV on 3rd June.
This Saturday sees a return to league action for the 3s, with a home fixture against Bangor 3rd XI.
