Ballymena under 16s travelled to Cookstown’s mid Ulster Arena on Saturday 23 March to play City of Armagh RFC in the Ulster Carpets League final. This occasion is the culmination of a league which sees 31 Ulster cub sides battling through league fixtures from September onwards in order to reach the final.
Unfortunately for the Ballymena team they came up short in the final, losing to Armagh 33 points to 8. Despite a strong start from Ballymena, who dominated possession and took a 3-0 lead after 11 minutes Armagh hit back with 5 unanswered tries before half time to post what looked like an unassailable lead. Ballymena bravely fought back in the second half with captain Logan Johnson leading from the front and they scored a try though influential number 8 Jack Alexander but it was not enough to break Armagh’s stranglehold and they scored another try of their own before the final whistle.
The team will now hope their good run in the league will continue into the cup run over the next few weeks.
