Cricket returned to Eaton Park in fine style on 1st May with the both 1st XI and 2nd XI registering emphatic wins.
The 1st XI kicked off their season with an impressive win over Saintfield in their first match in Section 2 of the NCU Senior League. On a fine day, with Eaton Park looking in great shape, skipper Stephen Colgan elected to bat first and the runs soon followed. In a remarkable innings, which saw both John Glass (120) and Stephen Colgan (103) score centuries, the home side finished their innings with 318 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. In response, Saintfield were always struggling, losing the first 6 wickets for just 31 runs and finishing all out for 90 runs.
Remarkably, it is believed this is the first time two Ballymena players have scored centuries in the same match making the performance all the more impressive. With a busy month of cricket ahead, this result is an excellent foundation for what lies ahead.
Meanwhile, on the second square, the 2nd XI returned to winning ways, after a creditable opening day defeat to reigning champions Waringstown, with an emphatic win over CIYMS. The visitors were bowled out for just 42 runs, with skipper Anthony Frazer taking 5 wickets and Owen Dick 4. In reply, Ballymena scored the required runs for the loss of just one wicket.
Both results augur well for the coming weeks.
